We are back with another edition of Grass Roots Music’s Top 5 gigs. Every month I trawl through the event calendar to bring you the very best gigs to put in your diary. The following performances are my top 5 picks for March.

11 March – The Academic – Vicar Street

The Academic are one of Ireland’s most exciting young bands on the scene at the moment. Despite their age, they have a lot of people talking and have built quite a reputation for their lives shows. The Mullingar lads will be performing in Vicar street this Friday and tickets are only €19.

17 March – Wankelmut – Opium Rooms

St. Patricks day is an extremely busy day for events. There is so much going on around the city during the day but deciding where to go that night can be a pain. To avoid this confusion, put this one in your diary. German DJ Wankelmut plays Opium Rooms on the 17th and has some amazing DJs in support. With good deals on drinks and great music this will definitely be a great night. Entrance can be paid on arrival but considering the crowd that will be out that night, buying tickets before is probably a good idea. Check out the event page here.

19 March – Mmoths Album Launch Party – District 8

This is an event that I have mentioned before but since then the supporting acts have been announced. I decided to included this on the list because many people may not have heard about it and its a great chance to experience some of the amazing young talent emerging on the music scene in Dublin. Of course it will be your first chance to hear the much anticipated ‘Luneworks’ album, but Somerville and DJ Deece have also been added to the lineup who are both making waves in their associated field. If there is one gig that you go to this month, make it this one. For more information and ticket details click here.

20 March – Little Green Cars – Whelans

Little Green Cars have recently come back on the scene with a new sound in their new album. The Dublin quintet have recently released ‘Ephemera’ entering them into the difficult ‘second album’ territory. However, the album has been well received  and the new musical tone has been praised. For the chance to experience it for yourself, they will be in Whelans on the 19th.

27 March – Damien Dempsey – Vicar Street

The 27 of March marks the start of the Centenary celebrations and there will be special events organised all over the city. Vicar Street are celebrating with a special performance from Damien Dempsey. The Irish singer-songwriter is a veteran in the Irish music scene and has toured the world with his amazing live performances. Vicar street will provide a great intimate setting for this event and tickets are going for €30.
