As you know, every month I compile a list of the top gigs for the coming month. Some artists you will be familiar with and some you won’t, but each one is guaranteed to be a great night. This month is no different, however I have decided to add in a track from each artist to give you a sample of what you can expect from the gig. The following list is my top 5 picks for April, with some amazingly talented Irish artists as well as visiting stars.
7 April – Newton Faulkner – Olympia Theatre
Most of you will be familiar with Newton Faulkner from his 2009 hit, Dream Catch Me. Although he seemed to disappear off the map after that, the Surrey man is back with a handful of new singles and is currently on a UK and Irish tour. He will be performing in the Olympia Theatre on the 7th and tickets are €27. Definitely worth going along to, even if its only to catch a glimpse of his incredible ginger dreadlocks in action.
8 April – Toby Kaar – Workmans Club
If this name is familiar, it may have been because Toby’s track “snapdragon” recently featured as the track of the week. I saw Toby preform at an album launch party recently and have been a fan ever since. I can guarantee that you have never hard anything like before. His music is so unique it would be impossible to assign it to a genre. He will be performing on the 8th in the Workmans club and tickets are only €10. Put this gig at the top of your list this month.
15 April – Hermitage Green – The Academy
Hermitage Green are an Irish acoustic folk rock band originally form Limerick. The band came together in 2010 and since then have accomplished great success in the industry in in a short period of time. They have recently been signed by Sony Music and have been touring in the UK and Ireland. Their unique arrangement of instruments, including a bodhrán, rhythmic guitar and banjo sets them apart and makes for a great live performance. To see these lads in action, head down to the Academy on the 19th. Tickets are priced at €19.
22 April – BellX1 – Vicar Street
This next band needs no introduction. Bellx1 have been around for years and are one of the most accredited bands in the Irish music scene. Known for their witty and sometimes bizarre lyrics, their music keeps fans on their toes. An example of this can be seen in their newly release single, “Upswing” which features the lyrics “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for”. The Dublin lads are currently on a national tour which will be stopping off in Vicar street on the 22nd. Tickets are €30.
29 April – Cinema – The Sugar Club
The final gig for April is from young Kildare producer, Cinema who recently launched his first album “A Night Train To Budapest”. To celebrate this launch, The Sugar Club are hosting an album launch party which will feature a live performance from Cinema as well as special guests who are yet to be announced. There are some fantastic tracks on this album which I cant wait to see preformed live. Tickets for this event are only €10 and for more information on the gig click here.
Thats it for this month’s top 5 gigs. Ill leave you with my favourite track from Cinema’s new album. Enjoy and I hope to see you out and about this month.
